Driving the cotter pin (yes, that is a cotter pin
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotter...%20split%20pin.) in with a hammer puts a far greater pressure on the wedge part of it than the nut alone does, forcing the pin towards the middle of the axle and the pin towards the outer end of it. That is what stretches the (thin) metal, leaving the eye too big. The nut applies enough pressure. Don't ask how I know this.
