Along the same way of thinking... The idle mixture screws can be adjusted nicely by cutting a two foot length of vacuum hose, stick one end down the carb and the other end in your ear. Moving the end in the carb from side to side and listening for the same exact percolating/hissing sound while adjusting the screws and you're there!
Works great for removing earwax in the event of a backfire as well!
