With the right tools, removing the valves is a pretty straightforward process. With a pry bar with a C-shaped opening on the end (of the right size) you compress the spring and remove the valve spring retainer from the tapered end of the valve and then remove the spring. Because of the tapered end on the stem of the valve, you need to raise the valve as far as it will go and with a special driver inserted into the resulting space beneath the head of valve drive out the split valve guide from the top. Seeing your improvising skills, you could probably come up with your own pry bar and valve guide driver or alternatively, purchase them from Snyder's (A-6513-T and A-6500-VGT).
