On our '29 touring car, I use plastic ties to hold the irons out and away from the body, otherwise they would rub against the belt line. I've noticed other phaetons where those cars have similar issues and did not use the ties, but anything to keep the folding mechanism against the rear iron/bow and and away from the body should do. If you use a top boot, these would not be seen, but even if they are, it seems far better than running the risk of damaging the paint and metal at the belt line. I would be surprised if your irons are bent, and it should be fairly easy to tell if they are since the folding mechanisms/struts would no longer be straight. I hope this helps. Good luck.
