you say a new battery shows 6.8 volts what you need to do is ck. your gen. output with the engine running @1000 rpm make sure its charging your battery then from their you go to all the cables to ck. for good clean contact don't just look at them take them apart from their connection and clean them if all that is good then its time to overhaul your starter remember this it doesn't take a lot of voltage to light a bulb but it takes a lot to turn a starter hope this helps
