Unless you run fuel injection where the fuel mixtures can be leaned out significantly, then running the spark plug gaps at the factory specs works best. Carbureted engines do not benefit from running the wider spark plug gaps. Where fuel mixtures run rich or the compression ratio has been raised, then reducing the spark plug gaps is the direction to go. For most carbureted applications, 0.035" gaps work well.
