Default No Start help

I tried starting my 30 Roadster today and it would not fire. I searched some troubleshooting threads to check for spark. I read to remove 1 spark plug lead and place it 1/4 inch from the plug and turn it over. When I did this it tried to start, I reattached it and it won't fire at all again. Can any help out? Thanks
