I assume when you say top shaft you mean the input shaft (main shaft)?
The gears sold by the suppliers from my experience are of good quality. Make sure they state made in USA. Stay away from any offshore stuff. I recently replaced my input only and it worked well with no abnormal problems or noises.
I also use the one sided sealed bearings ( debatable topic like oil) and the shafts with the orings.
