Overs the years STUFF can happen. The passage can plug up, the housing could be turned with a sleeve installed. Both of which could stop the grease. Then, there are those that would keep pumping on that gun and fill everything with grease.
When it comes right down to it, both camps are right. If you're able to use the grease gun, that'll work. If you wish to clean and pack the bearings every now and again, that'll work too.
