Another Axle Seal Question
I am currently rebuilding my differential (first time) I just want to confirm which side of the seal is the lip side. I have attached a picture of one side of a seal. Would appreciate confirmation that this is the lip side.
From what I am reading in previous post this is this side that when installed faces the brake drum end of the axle housing and toward the transmission in the torque tube?
When I look at the seal, however, at the center the shape is the same (tapered on both sides the same) so would it really make any difference which side faces in or out? It looks to me that since the taper is the same it should do what it is suppose to do no matter which way it is put in.
I would also think that if the pictured side is facing toward the differential on both the axle housings and the torque tube there would be no chance of catching the flap that is on the other side of the seal and fold it back when pushing the axles and drive shaft through them, thus not distorting them.
Thanks, Mark
