Default exhaust to intake manifold pipe - plumbing method request

reading California Bill's Ford Speed Manual - 1952 edition - page 40 makes the statement: "A low manifold with heat is more attractive ..."

so my question du jour .. . . . how was the piping run from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold. was the exhaust gas desirable to run through an intake? are the chambers of an intake manifold such that the exhaust gas was isolated from the combustion air being run through the carburetor(s)? and then, how do the exhaust gases exhaust?

no; i've not read the entire book, and perhaps there will be more told as it goes on, but i wanted to get a place marker for my subsequent questions since my 'search' under the above title left me unsatiated.

thanks,

sid
