Regarding thermostats: They come with a small hole in the flange. That does not flow enough coolant to operate the thermostat consistently. When the engine is under load, like going up a long grade, the hot coolant will built up in the head and outlet pipe and finally open the thermostat, sending a slug of hot coolant to the top of the radiator. This looks like the car is overheating, sending coolant out the cap. The coolant will cool down because the thermostat is open and the thermostat will close again causing the cycle to repeat.

I drill out the small hole to about 3/8". I run my thermostat summer and winter with no problems. The temperature gauge in the gooseneck always shows about 160F, which is the temperature that the thermostat is set at.
