Same thing happened to me. A fresh rebuilt (from NAPA, no less) seemed to labor starting my car, so I installed one from my "stash" with an old tag on it that said "GOOD". I installed it (not much of a task since I have a lift), and it started quickly and easily.
BTW, I have never had to shim a flathead starter.
