Service Bulletins p. 248 Fig 507 shows a cross section of the juncture of the two boards. From the pix it is apparent that the angle board (front) goes in first - and the horizontal board (rear) goes in second.

No felt or other cushion is shown between the boards, not to say that one couldn't be made to fit.
