When I was traveling, I'd keep a heavy duffel bag of spare parts and tools on the floor of the rumble. Soft side suitcases, laundry bags and everything else on top. and yes, a full size suitcase lays flat on the rumble seat with the lid closed. A breakdown on the road and everything goes to the curb to get to the parts. PITA.
