I'll try one more time. What year engine and car? If it's a post '49 8BA engine, it has what is called a "Load-A-Matic" distributor whose advance system will only work with certain Ford carburetors and your Edelbrock ain't one of them. You will need to change the distributor out for an aftermarket mechanical advance unit or a converted SBC distributor. If it's an earlier model engine, you can still use the stock distributor.
If you are trying to run an otherwise stock 239 ci engine with 500 cfm carb, you're probably have to make some changes to it (jets, etc.) to even get it close. A better choice would be a 390 cfm Holley or a Rochester 2G (which needs different manifold).
