Hi Mjmiller1967, and welcome to the Ford Barn.
I experienced a very stiff new cable in a 1950 Ford when I added overdrive. In my case the dash bracket was bent and binding the cable. Did you test the cable for easy movement before installing it? Have you lubricated the cable after installing the housing?
A 51 Ford with a six and overdrive will be a nice car to drive, let us know how this goes for you.
Also, I suggest you start a new thread introducing yourself and your car. You will probably get more attention with a new thread than at the end of this old thread.
