Misalignment of your throttle linkage would be the main cause, in turn itself caused by mix and match assemblies starting with the carburetor itself, and including engine and motor mounts. Another very common cause can be the firewall mounted linkage shaft being unable to move freely. The fact of a difference being noted between engine running or not running may point to loose motor or transmission mounts.
