As I recall, the early 1928 starter with Abel drive for the multi-disk clutch was shimmed to create clearance between the drive and the ring gear. Does your friend's starter have any shims behind the starter mounting flange? He may have to experiment with different thicknesses of shims to get the correct clearance. These shims used to be available through the vendors, but I don't know if that is the case anymore, since so many parts are now "out of stock" or "discontinued" with most vendors. He may have to make his own shims from brass. Or does he have too many shims already?
