It was a popular trick to use when the rear leafs began to sag (those old FORDS had weak springs from the factory) and no one wanted to spend the money on new springs,

RACE CAR FEATURE that added 50 extra HP and cut front end wind resistance through the traps. The truth is it bent and weakened the springs even further.
I was way too car smart at that point to ever do anything like that ...
