I have used a neoprene gasket for years with out difficulty - cork gets hard and brittle. TerryS may have a stuck valve in the fuel pump - hit it with screw driver handle has solved that issue for me. I have an electric pump at the tank - good way to prime and if there is a leak on the suction side between tank and mechanical pump it will show up.
