Kinda sneaky, but I've found that when you try to install the belt sometimes it doesn't get into the crank pulley because it gets caught between the pulley and the cross member. Hard to see, and the effect is that it appears the belt is too short. You have to force it onto the crank pulley.
Also, you might see how loose the "H" bracket is on your alternator. If it's way tight and canted too far outside the belt won't fit. If you loosen the "H" adapter and then use the prop that bolts to the front engine cover you may have some better luck. Then tighten the "H" bracket.
BTW, I use a BX40, the BX42 is too long. I find that the standard non-cogged belt available from the suppliers is too long to use on an alternator.
