Years back an old lowrider guy told me the deal 'back in the day' was to use 2" pipe to the mufflers then 1 3/4" after that.
I tried it on an old ch#vy 6 with Smithies and it sounded pretty good - all things considered.
Not sure how a flathead would sound tho'.
