Noise from a metal timing gear depends on how they fit. There should be .003-4 clearance with the crank gear. After who knows how many babbitt jobs, normal wear and tear, etc , the crankshaft may not be exactly centered and the fit with the cam gear is off. Dan McEachern makes both over and undersized gears so you can get a proper fit.
