I hope I am understanding the problem correctly. If you are talking about the spring that holds the pump/distributor drive and the swpring top rests against the top of the valve chamber--
With the distributor out, reach down with needle nose pliers and pull the drive shaft out through the dist hole. With the shaft out, give the top of the spring a good jerk with pliers.
