Clutch pedal "free travel" is a big deal. It ensures the throw out bearing is not touching the clutch fingers with foot off the pedal. As the disk wears the free travel decreases and must be readjusted to prevent constant bearing rotation and failure. Too much free travel is only a problem when the gears start to clash and double clutching seems to be losing effectiveness. Adjusting the pedal travel requires disconnecting the linkage and some trial and error. After market linkage adjusters are available which simplify the job and do not require disconnecting.
