SOP thru May 1929 License Clip Bolt, A-20566
Yesterday I was working on putting together some assemblies of parts and the License Plate Clips were just one of the assemblies.
I was working on the the assembly of the first generation of clips, SOP thru May 1929.
The Standards tells us that the bolt used for this assembly was a “Unfinished 1/4”-20 x 1” hex head (3/8” x 1/4”) bolt”.
In the October 1928 Parts Price List it lists this bolt as “A-20566…Front License Clip Bolt…1/4”-20 USS x 1” hex head bolt”.
So for about 2 or so hours I spent going through my original Model A Ford bolts looking for a 1/4"-20 x 1” (3/8” x 1/4”) bolt. None to be found anywhere!
All I had were about 50 or so 1/4"-20 x 1” hex head bolts for which were removed from the right and left side of the cowl area for holding and attaching the 1928-1929 gas tank to.
So I decided to see just what that part number was and it turns out that it is the same bolt, A-20566, for which is used for the SOP thru May 1929 License Plate Clips.
The problem is that the “head” figures given in the Standards, (3/8” x 1/4"), are not right. No wonder guys have said to me that these bolts are very hard to find…The are hard to find because they do not exist! At least in my research.
The correct “head” figures for the A-20566 is (3/8” Head Width x 3/16” Thick).
Please correct me if I am wrong on this assumtion.
Thanks.
