What I like about using a diode, if the battery becomes fully charged it blocks feed back to the generator which will burn up the generator. When I was a young man I had a 1934 Ford; if on a long drive during daylight hours I would turn on my headlights to keep the battery from becoming fully charged to protect the generator.
