Thanks everyone for trying to help me. No the top tang is below the top flange. I will try and take the top to the inside as someone suggested. I agree it went in there but it might not have went in there in one piece. I am prepared to take the top pin out if I have to and remove top flange. Since I have ordered a new one(gear is worn) I could grind the back side of flange down to get it out. Like I said I would get more aggressive but if I force that top out that gear left partway in the hole could break out the cast iron block which is not very thick at that point.
