Thanks all for the suggestions. There was a lot of hardened grease around the gear as you can kind of see in the picture. I am now soaking the assembly in lacquer thinner and the the lacquer thinner is dissolving the grease. I think I will soak the assembly in Evaporust or ATF after the lacquer thinner in case the shaft is rusted to the gear. With all the grease around the gear, I doubt it is rusted, but to make sure, a little soaking in rust remover I hope will make sure. I will then try what Benson described.
