Your photo reminds me of a similar experience.
Same thing happened to me . . . .
only it was a new car, and it was on a dark back street in Detroit. In 15 minutes there was nothing left of my car but the chassis !

The problem you had was all the kids own metric tools now days. See, them kids would have left it alone if it had SAE nuts and bolts.
