Also be sure you have the amperage to run the fan, some of them draw more amps than you have available with a generator.

You still need to know what gears are in the original case. If the tower was changed it is possible the gears were changed. And if not, that later tower will not be working correctly.

That would seem odd as the is so much difference between 38 std and 38 dxl front ends. But I have never compared a 37 to a 38 dxl.

Did you put anything on the connections when you put it back together? A little grease can help with oxidation and corrosion.

If you jumped it across the solenoid and just ended up with sparks either the starter is locked up internally or something is locking up the engine.

The rear axle has to come apart, the axles are removed toward the center section (after the axle housing is separated from the center section). This is what an axle looks like.
