Re: axle key

Remove the shear key and the Model A will not go. The axle will spin in the drum because the friction of the tapered axle-drum hub cannot react the driveline torque.

Re: axle key

100 ft-lbs on a taper??? Way too much torque in my opinion. The taper centers the axle and the shear key reacts the driveline torque. What is important is that the shear key have a snug fit (no play).

Re: What's the latest you can remember anyone using an A?

From 1962 to 1965, my Model A was my only car, and I drove it daily about 100 miles per day to and from work. I put the Coupe into storage when the differential failed and I could not afford to fix...

Re: Dizzy side hole

The distributor body opening for the timing lever should limit the spark advance to 20 degrees. A 20-degree limit was appropriate back when the Model A was and gasoline octane was about 50. However,...

Re: king pin assembely

The purpose of the shim washers is ensure that the roller bearings carry the vertical loads from the wheels. If not shimmed correctly, the king pin lock bolts incorrectly carry the vertical loads.

Re: Front Fenders

1928 and 1929 front fenders are the same in fit, form and function.

1930 fenders are unique because they have a piece of the running apron. So the 1930 running board aprons are unique also.

Re: 31 A rear axle shaft damage

I have replaced rear axles with used originals more than once without any negative consequences. The 190A in my avatar has a driver's side axle salvaged from another axle, and it runs quiet.
