Use the came gear that provides the correct gear lash. Always check with a feeler gauge if you are not certain. A repair of the bearings can make part relations change somewhat. Are you using a metal...

You state that, but I have never read that it would be the way to time a Model A Ford. And there are aggregate clearances that must be rotationally mitigated for precise timing and a great running...

You should be able to decern a difference in sound and idle even with the carb set at a low RPM.

When engines were replaced at shops they sometimes were re-stamped with the # of the junk engine to match the title and frame.

Rootlieb makes great products and you shouldn't have any trouble with their products. I would first try to repair the original just for the sake of originality and the satisfaction of doing the job....

Change the points when they don't work any longer after careful adjustments fail. When they are working they are good. Same with any condenser. It is good to carry spares and not worry about parts...
