Re: Windage tray yes or no

I think I have come up with a plan "A" (least used plan in the world).
Fabricate a tray closely resembling that used on the 50s Mercury. I think that it will improve oil control and should be...

Re: Windage tray yes or no

A little investigating has yielded a few pictures of the 49-53 Merc pan and windage tray. It seems that with some modification the tray portion could be fitted to the 59A pan. Might even be simpler...

Re: Windage tray yes or no

I did notice the design features of the Milodon windage tray and thought I might incorporate something similar. I will hold minimal clearance on the crank and rods and use 14or 16Ga.for...

Re: Windage tray yes or no

Thanks for the input. It looks like I will have to fabricate my own. It doesn't look too difficult (famous last words). I do wonder about the clearance between the tray and the crank/rod rotating...

Re: Windage tray yes or no

I have looked at several designs from simple screens to elaborate designs that incorporate hinged doors etc. I intend to use the car as a street rod and I want it to be the best it can be. There is ,...

Windage tray yes or no

Is a windage tray a worthwhile addition to a modified street engine?

Re: 97 internal leak

Thanks for the tip. I pulled the bowl portion of the carbs off leaving the bases in place, I found that very little adjustment was required to sync the butterflies. I replaced the emulsion tube from...

97 internal leak

I fired up the engine today for the first time in a long time. I have dual 97's on it. I noticed the rear carb was dripping gas in the right venturi at fast idle. The source of the leak seemed to be...

Re: Oil leak

You can bet I'll use grease going back. I just finished up soldering up the hole in the gallery plug and I noticed a little hole (1/4" ) located just above the gallery plug 2" +- what is its...

Re: Oil leak

Well I did a fine job putting the front cover on.I had hard time getting it off. Lots of gasket scraping to do. I will have to drop the pan as I messed up the front of the pan gasket. I am going back...

Re: Oil leak

I will be starting disassembly tomorrow. The plan is to replace the gallery plug, check the thrust of the cam gear and seal the repair sleeve. If necessary I will drop the pan and start from square...

Re: Oil leak

Good morning, as I recall, it's been 4years since I last buttoned up the newly rebuilt engine, I sealed the pan/timing cover just as you described. I am reasonably sure I installed the oil galley...

Re: Oil leak

It should be noted that I have a 59A pan and a 8CM timing cover. That shouldn't be a problem should it?

Re: Oil leak

W Brown: Yes I did use a speedy sleeve

tubman: I soaked the seal and used all the care I could muster.
I must be doing something wrong. This isn't rocket surgery.

Re: Oil leak

I am wondering if there are any other options, or are the rope seal and the Speedway one piece the only two choices?

Oil leak

Fired up the the duce today and much to my chagrin I had an oil leak. Again. It is at the front main seal. Again. First time I used the rope seal, big leak! Tried the one piece seal next same result....

Re: Oil level. Is your dipstick lying? Make sure you know what you've got.

I have a question re: the length of the dip stick for a 59A block and pan. The dip stick I have is marked 8CM (late model) and is 16+inches from end to stop. I would like to know what the dimension...

Re: Going back together

Thanks to all who have responded,I appreciate your input. It would appear that latex paint on the heads doesn't have much of a following. I will stick to the aluminum paint for the gaskets. Thanks...

Going back together

I'm putting the engine back together and it is time to get the heads installed. The heads are Edelbrock and the engine is a 59A. I am using bolts as the fasteners and I am using copper head gaskets....
