Re: Grease fitting

No, 1/8" pipe thread tap is quite a bit larger than 1/8" diameter as BobC suggests.

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but aren't the press-in fittings 5/16" diameter hole? But you need to be...

Re: Grease fitting

There are two ways the grease fittings go in - the ones that press in, and the threaded ones. I don’t recall off the top of my head which the front spindles are, but if they are threaded it is 1/8-27...

Re: Installing shock links

The bad news is, yeah, it’s a bit of a PITA to install the tubular links. The good news is that you only need to do it once. If for some reason you need to remove either the shock or the suspension...

Re: Spacers on shift rail to prevent breaking shift forks in Model A transmission

I went to Steve and Cindi’s shop in Colusa a couple of weeks ago when I picked up my overdrive. Lots of stuff in very limited space, but there is in fact order to the madness, and yes, he knows...

Re: Recommended Turning Signal Switch

Werner - are you checking the USPS number at USPS.com or at stamps.com? Bert’s uses the latter as his interface, but I’ve had it not update as well as usps.com. Either way, it will show up!

Re: Recommended Turning Signal Switch

Bert’s automated invoicing system will only go as far as telling you that a label has been prepared, but somewhere in their documentation they will give you a tracking number. After that you need to...

Re: Car Is Shrinking........

I had to sell my ‘30 CCPU when my wife could no longer negotiate into the passenger seat after her hip replacement. Got the Town Sedans because I could push the front seat back. Better for her, and...

Re: Florida Drivers

Myt last bike was a BMW R1200RT - horizontally opposed twin "sport touring" bike. I put 96K+ miles on it over the last ten years I drove it. One thing I've always told myself was that I needed to be...

Re: Car Is Shrinking........

The shift tower will come off easily without removing the transmission. It does take a special tool to safely remove the shift lever from the tower, though. That way you can grab onto the lower...

Re: how to get bushings out of oil pump without busting the casting (again)

To get brass bushings out of castings, I first try threading a coarse tap into the bushing, then use a brass drift on the end of the tap to gently drive the bushing out. Don’t hit too hard, taps are...

Re: Engine Number

The way I look at it, the owner is stamping a piece of metal. How that is interpreted is a different issue. It’s no different than adding a stamped number on the underside of a frame member, where it...

Re: Engine Number

My '30 came in from Wisconsin in 2017. Apparently the Wisconsin title had the engine number listed as the VIN, and the person from California DMV verified that number and issued a California title...

Re: Recommended Turning Signal Switch

I believe this is the one I installed several years ago in my '30 CCPU (gone now). It is a bit clunky, and has to be diddled into its mounted position so you don't smack your knee on it getting in...

Re: Rear backing plate order of assembly

Don - Spring and shackles are independent of the backing plates. I just did mine last week as follows:

Take banjo+axle housings+torque tube+internals. Add backing plates using the two rear (short)...

Re: Florida Drivers

When I rode motorcycles on the open road I used to figure that 80% of the people didn't see me, and the other 20% were aiming for me. Served me well, never got hit in 50+ years of riding.

Re: Differential Pinion Gear Bearing Preload

Dave - I haven't measured it, but if you snug up the bearings to "no slop" on the carrier before installing on the shaft, after you install it onto the shaft I've felt a noticable increase in...

Re: Differential Pinion Gear Bearing Preload

Dave - I've found that the preload changes a bit due to the torqueing down of the pinion carrier onto the tapered end of the driveshaft - seems to maybe expand the carrier a tad? Something to keep in...

Re: Differential Pinion Gear Bearing Preload

Excellent point, and an excuse for a new tool! Actually, I measured on the Mitchell stub shaft, which is maybe a quarter the length of a driveshaft. I did not feel any binding effect, which I suspect...

Re: A newbie needs help!

When you grind off the old numbers you are left with a smooth flat area on the block, which is unlike the rough casting surface the block originally came with. Sharp eyes could use this to deduce...

Re: Tie rod

G - Not sure what you're asking here. Are you saying that the tie rod rotates within the ends, or that when you grab the tie rod it rotates easily several degrees around the balls, with the ends...

Re: Leaking gas tank

The person who "restored" my '31 slant did the same thing, the old tank mount just kinda hangs in there looking lonely.

Re: Leaking gas tank

Mac - I had the same issue but around the outlet fitting, not the column support. I fixed as nkaminar suggests - drain the tank to stop the leak, thoroughly clean and dry (brake cleaner works well),...
