Don't Give up - There is a finish line!

Excuse this long post. It is a summary of a few years.

About 3 years ago we bought a Ford Model A. As you can see from my signature line, we have a lot of experience with older (but nothing as old...

Re: How do you avoid people swarming your car when you stop?

Smile. Answer the same questions the same way you did 30 minutes ago. Be proud. If you don't like it, buy a Camry. I get it with all my fun cars. The below commandments for Ferrari owners apply to us...

Re: Do you need a car hauled?

Where in FL? We may be moving an 66 Triumph Spitfire from Port St. Lucie to Hoschton, GA this week.

Re: I must be doing something wrong

Ok. I thought I'd post a follow-up. First - Thank You to all of you who helped. Second - I have to send a big shout out to Mike's "A" Ford-able Model A Parts.

I pulled the distributor and the...

Re: I must be doing something wrong

Thanks all for the information. Looks like a consensus. I'm going to attack the timing again on Saturday and while I'm at it - make sure the throttle has full travel. Luckily I'm only about 25...

I must be doing something wrong

I'm getting confused over my working on my Model A (late '28) and the engine. When I got the car, it would only go 25 mph and backfire. My wife and I have been slowly going over everything to fix it....

Re: How do you prevent theft of your car?

I don't do anything special. I don't lock the car (I've even accidentally left the key in the ignition since that is where I keep it at home). So few people can drive a manual transmission that to...

Re: Starter won't engage, just whirl

Just a follow-up to close the thread. Thanks to all the help from everyone. Spring replaced. Model A started on first attempt perfectly. Idles nicely. Now working on adjusting the carburetor. As per...

Re: fuse burning out on drivers side near starter?

Another resource to help you is this video. We used the lightbulb and found it easier than a voltmeter.

Re: Timing question

Look very closely at the points and make sure they really are closed. Mine did same and turned out that they looked closed but they were not quite. Light flickered but did not go out.

Re: Explain why you chose your avatar ......

I use it in every forum just because it is easy. I started using it years ago in a forum where there was a lot of discussion of wanting pictures of the members. Driving a convertible in the mountains...

Re: Starter won't engage, just whirl

I was lucky. I had the post Oct 1928 spring. Easy to find. I'm less than 25 min from Mikes. Either cheap and fast mail or a quick trip up the road if I can find time during business hours.

Should...

Re: Starter won't engage, just whirl

I'll get out my books and get to work. How hard is this one going to be?

Starter won't engage, just whirl

I've searched the threads and many describe similar effects but not describe the same noise. My starter has been working fine and turning over the engine reliably since I've owned it. However, the...

Re: Where is your allegiance?

I've only tried a few and had good luck. But once I found that it was only a 30 minute drive to Mike's, I was hooked. I like taking my old parts to them, laying them out on the counter and having...

Re: Sta-Bil 360

I'm willing to try it. I use the regular Sta-Bil with every tank of gas on my Opel with Weber. Before I used it, every 500-1000 miles, the performance would drop due to a "varnishing" effect that...

Re: Is this going to be as bad as I think?

I have to admit I'm enjoying all the input. I haven't ordered the parts yet but will be this weekend and then probably installing the weekend after. I guess I better get out the PB Blaster again and...

Re: Is this going to be as bad as I think?

I didn't have any side play in the distributor. Oil did not appear to have any water in it. All the head nuts were checked in the last month to be 55 ft-lbs.

Full Disclosure History:
When I got...

Re: Is this going to be as bad as I think?

Thanks for all the input. Looks like it isn't a 10 minute job. Guess I will have to schedule a weekend for this.

Ray - yup. 0.020, opening and closing nicely. Terrible spark, very weak. Plugs are...

Is this going to be as bad as I think?

I've been having some ignition trouble. Lack of power and backfires. Using this forum and Les' book, I've think I've got a problem with my condenser. As this is an older restoration that I bought and...
