Re: Distribator off by one tooth - Pulley casting number

Me, too, JSeery. Here's my understanding and summary. The PO's car was timed to the factory marks and hesitating, spitting. He found a mark scribed on the lock down pad (I think) of the distributor...

Re: Distribator off by one tooth - Pulley casting number

BUT moving the distributor one tooth doesn't change the TDC location on the pulley. The OP said he verified the TDC using the cable tie method to be about 1 1/2" in advance of the factory timing...

Re: 39 accelerator pedal

As said above, the hinge and attaching fastener keeps the pedal "square". The rod has pivots at each end and is not intended to hold it in place.

Re: Flathead Engine Type?

The water pumps look like Mercury '49-'51. It looks like there is a little green paint on the lower front of the head, so Mercury is my guess. The oil pan doesn't look like it is from a car, though.

Re: Vacuum leak

If you spray over a vacuum leak you are adding fuel to a lean mixture caused by the leak. If you spray fuel into a mixture that isn't leaned out by a leak, you make the mixture over rich.

Re: Incorrect timing on pulley of 53' Mercury

When I blow up the picture in post # 36 I think I see the woodruff key in the slot that is broken out of the pulley. If so, it is not slipped.

Now I DO see where you posted on the early v8 forum yesterday. I hope someone can help you with your questions. If you don't get some help soon, maybe start a new thread over there. You might also...

Re: Incorrect timing on pulley of 53' Mercury

Just to be sure: you did bring the piston up against the stop, mark the pulley, reverse the rotation back to the stop, mark the pulley, and divide the two marks for TDC?

Re: Identification Numbers Are Confusing!!

You are in the right church to get the information you need, but you need to move to the right pew. This post should be on the "Early V8" forum here in the Fordbarn. Some of the more knowledgable...

Re: Incorrect timing on pulley of 53' Mercury

In my opinion, the speculation will not cease until you establish TDC. It can be done easily using the often mentioned zip tie method. You can troubleshoot from there.

I degreed the pulley on my...

Re: Mitchell in a 37..Report

Thanks for the feedback on speed/rpm. Judging from your ratio/tire/speed information, you evidently have the 36% gearing in the Mitchell.

Re: How did you do the link cords on your LED's??

It looks like your lights are hanging from chains. If so, measure the correct distance to cut the PVC, then just push the lights apart to insert the plug. The only problem is cramming the extra cord...

Re: 1954 Mercury Yosemite Yellow Touch Up Paint

I had a local automotive paint store scan the blue paint on my car. They made me a small jar with a brush in the cap and a spray can. The match was perfect. The scanner was portable, so they can take...

Re: Swap a 59ab flathead on my 49 shoebox

He really needs the '49 transmission because the clutch equalizer bar bolts to it. I suppose a bracket could be made to adapt to another transmission if justified.

Re: Mitchell overdirve in a 37

I would be interested in which ratio you chose, your rear end ratio, and your opinion of the gearing when you have given it a test.

I'm not a member there, but I just clicked on a thread and was able to read it clearly. It even showed the pictures that some forums don't if you aren't logged in.

That is a rare find! It makes me wonder if anyone with the family name Gell still lives on Marvel Street in Swansea.

Re: Dtill a hole in the floor?

There should already be a knock-out for the kick down switch. Just hit it with a punch.

Re: Install oil filter

You have an 8BA, so you have the tapped hole above the oil pan for a return. It should not be restricted. The supply from the engine oil gallery is from one of the ports on the rear. The supply line...

Re: Install oil filter

The process requires drilling/tapping in the oil passages. Maybe not a good idea on an assembled engine unless one has a way to keep chips from ending up in the engine.
