Re: O/T What material would you use for new axle shafts?

1144 'stressproof" and do not heat treat it. You need to watch what you buy with 1144, as some of it is approx RC30, some as low as RC15. I would avoid anything supplied under RC20. Keep the feed...

Re: iPhone App to Track Maintenance, Fuel Ups, Etc.

It appears the societal regression from books and paper to apps and internet has redefined behavior. Anal retentiveness, once an oddity, has become the norm. I realize this as I type . . . on my...

Re: iPhone App to Track Maintenance, Fuel Ups, Etc.

When I think back about all the maintenance and repairs I've done on cars over the years I would like an app to make me forget!

Re: How to age Caledon tubing?

The original gas line was terne coated seamed steel tubing. Terne is an alloy of less than 20% tin, sometimes 1 or 2% antimony, and the remainder lead. It quickly aged to a dull 20% brightness gray...

Re: Distilled Water?

Getting back to the OP's original Q, in many municipalities the tap water contains additives to prevent the water from attacking the iron water system street feed pipes and rusting them through.

Re: How do gauges attach to dual bracket?

Many small gauges have a "U" shaped bracket over the back that draws the gauge bezel tight against the panel.

Re: LED headlights in a 6 volt car anyone?

You will see a reduction in use-able road beam pattern! Bright appearing, but in the wrong directions. You will also have headlamps that put out almost no photons in the orange and red wavelengths...

Re: Ammeter hookup

The alternator max output has nothing to do with what shows on the amp gauge! Don't fall into that trap.

The amp gauge ONLY shows what is go in/out of the battery while running. NOT what the...

Re: Title

The original vehicle identification number is stamped on the frame under the body about where your left foot rests. Some states will require you to remove the body from the frame to verify that...

Re: Grease

You can either use the original grease gun or get a fitting from most of the Model A parts vendors to use on a modern grease gun.

If you like things restored and historical rather than modified...

Re: model A with a stromberg 97 stalls at highway speeds

If your pump feeds fuel at a faster rate than gravity flow to it then a slight negative pressure is produced in the tank feed line. That is why I said check for full flow at the pump inlet, not it's...

Re: How to mount the piston rings from above?

Following up on Jim Brierley's post about the top bore bevel, there is another problem:

Often the bore bevel or chamfer's depth exceeds the thickness of the thin top and bottom parts of that...

Re: model A with a stromberg 97 stalls at highway speeds

Check for a restricted fuel flow FROM tank TO pump. I assume your pump is mounted well below the tank, at frame level? With feed line disconnected at the pump measure the fuel free flow through...

Re: Were "Suicde Doors" Really Dangerous?

Well beyond the 20's/30's- I believe Ford's last "suicide door" was on the 1971 four-door Thunderbird. That's just two many doors on a T-Bird!

Re: What Defines Over-Revving The Model A's Engine

In addition to all the things Tobey said about 'windage' in the crankcase, vehicles with dipper lube of connecting rod bearings have another concern.

In a Model A with dipper trays the torrent of...

Re: What Defines Over-Revving The Model A's Engine

The oil tray that feeds the dippers begins to suffer from 'windage' above 3200 rpm. That said, years ago modified A's raced with rod dippers in the 4-5000 rpm range.

Second point, even if you...

Re: Good Spark Plug for a Brumfield 7 to 1 Head

I also have a Brumfield Super head. My compression ratio is higher than yours, though. About 8:1, my cranking compression is 155-160 psi. The W14's run well in mine. If your head is fouling...

Re: One Nut Adjustable Vavle lifter

Self-locking really means that they do not ever lock. There is friction/ interference in the thread fit making them stiff to turn, somewhat like a 'self-locking' nut. The supposed advantage is...

Or you could just bring...

Re: Distributor shaft wobble?

By having a one-way shaft fit you can take the dizzy out and put it back in without changing the timing so long as you do not loosen/ twist the cam. You can't do that with a later dizzy with multiple...

Re: Is there a way to reset the ammeter to zero?

If you disassemble the ammeter you can bend the needle that much. The needle is rather thin aluminum, much like a throw away pie tin. It takes two pair of tweezers and a very light touch. You also...
