Yes,its called piston protrusion.the space between the head and the top of the piston is called the quench area,ideal quench is .040..but more is okay.

Counterbalancing is important if you plan on revving your engine beyond 3500 rpm..so is crossdrilling the crankshaft and pressurizing the rods..racing its mandatory,street its not.

The closest thing to a 'harmonic balancer' flywheel is a flex plate/torque converter on an automatic transmission,it provides centrifugal and well as some fore and aft dampening.

No it doesnt,the crankshaft position sensor works on hall effect,the passing of a steel reluctor wheel or tone ring (it has teeth,not unlike a gear) above a magnetic pickup.As the crankshaft spins...
