I'd rather not have the tank supporting my column at all.
Besides can't access the top of the tank seam without removing the cowel.

That's exactly the problem. That wood support is in the way and makes installing the later style support a big job.

The wood piece you describe is also on my 28 Briggs and is a problem when trying to install the 31 style steering support.
My original support is starting to leak.
Any suggestions ?
