I experienced a bad spot on the ring gear, worn or broken teeth. Every once in awhile the engine would stop on that dead spot. Put the car in second and hand push it a few feet. Then try to start it....

Had the engine sputter and stop issue and I loosened the gas cap and heard the telltale "whoosh". Put cap back on loosely and finished the 65 mile trip. Retightened the cap and the issue happened...

The soot is not being created at startup because after a good run it would be gone. I tend to believe that there is a too rich issue causing carbon build up. It could be jets or even just mixture...
