Re: Loose Rod

I agree never found a insert off. Honing a insert is a bad idea. There is not that much bearing material on them.

Re: Loose Rod

Yes I did it when I first started working for my Dad in his repair garage. I still have the grinder. I have used it to grind rod journals on a model A crank in my lathe.

Re: Model A 350/350 Virus

when the small block came out in 1955 there was no engine like them. They were smaller than the rest of the V8,s and faster than most and would rev higher than the rest. They were the best engine at...

Re: Running out old babbit

If they are going to put in inserts why not just bore the babbitt out, it works for me. I would not want the job after some one was messing with it. Ok I do not want it any-way.

Re: Tappet(lifter) Noise

I say a sticking valve, slow to close. Try some marvel mystery oil in the gas. this happens to a engine that sits a long time. Or if you have the head off try oil on the valve stem.

Re: Rods

I have done it a couple of times. But you would be better off buying new rods with the bearings. Do not think you will find any one that has done it with old rods. If you do it will not be cheap.

Re: High carbon on valves

Carbon like you are seeing is running to cool, running short trips, running to rich. Plus maybe using a little oil.

Re: Half of a cotter pin in oil pan?

They do not use cotter pins on new cars. Use really good nuts torque to speck and for get it.
Now if I do some one else engine I use the pins, other wise they would bad mouth you.

The noise sounds like a center main knock, not a rod.

Re: Missing Valve seat

yes I put a chamfer on the seat then roll metal from the block on the chamfer. I used a black fluid in my Dads garage, but I do not know where he got it from.

Re: Missing Valve seat

If you do it right they will stay in place. But I would never use them unless I had to. I never had one come loose. But I have fixed a few other people have done.

Re: Snyder’s Inserted Rod Size?

There is a lot more to it than just boring out the rod to the insert size. You have to have it in the right location, must be parallel with the wrist pin, rod bolts need to be torqued to the right...

Re: NC? Request for Antique Vehicle exam

Re: Engine Noise

with out hearing it, it is hard to say, but if it changes when you short it out to a faster noise my guess would be a rod. I would pull the pan and check the rod, piston rings wrist pin in that...
