will the missing shims affect slippage in all gears on just in second? Just rebuilt tower and still same problem. May well be worn second gear.

Chris, I think you maybe correct about slot length. You said tapered ends (plural), I think the key was tapered on only one end. So should both ends be tapered and the tapered part would go face down...

Thanks Mitch, since writing the post I looked at the hub and axle more closely. I think I have an understanding about the key and the hub.

How far should the axle key extend toward the backing plate in the axle slot? Should most of the key be in the hub, axle, or about evenly divided between the two?

were the two axles marked differently? I have a 28 pickup and I noticed that the axle has AA stamped on the inside of the front axle.

Do you have to remove the narrow spaced detent shaft to replace the detent caps and spring? I think you do based on what I read in Andrews book, but wanted to confirm from someone here that has done...
