Re: Emergency brake issues

I had the same situation. i bought a car with the hand brakes in a bag. One pf the backing plates was bent where the hand brake hits the tab. After a new plate and reinstall, the hubs just locked...

Re: No need to go 70mph

Hmmmm, I'd think twice. If it won't go 70, then any situation where it is slightly loaded means it will be slightly fuel starved. This could be 60 with a head wind, climbing a hill, full passenger...

Re: Leather rod bearings

I did some endurance runs with those guys. They had a great ability to get people to help them out. The guy on the ground in the picture is Tim Knapp, the Mayor of Wilsonville (near Portland),...

Re: so this just happened....

I remember a few stories on here about a tranny with worn forks or shifter ball being able to go into 2 gears at once, locking things solid. If this happened under way, or under power, it could blow...

Re: Torque Tube

I have one in Portland. It was used as a trailer axle, so the tube sat empty and unlubed. It has rust, but since the bearings get replaced, it shouldn't matter too much. If you dig into it and it...

Re: putting gasoline in your Model A

A lot of times the gas station will have the u shaped plate to hold the spring nozzle back. They use it on motorcycles, which almost never have enough depth to compress the snorkel.

Re: Model A cross-country migration

I just looked at your route, and the following applies to any winter drive there in any car. Have food, water, and blankets. 26 is a "highway" but out in parts of Utah and Wyoming there is a lot of...

Re: How to balance fan blades?

D'oh! You're right.
That fixes the "harder to install" issue as well.

Re: How to balance fan blades?

Dynamic balancing of anything is important if the item is long along the shaft, like a crank. They dynamically balance car tires because they are getting pretty wide nowadays, i.e. long along the...

3rd place is just second loser.

I and my navigator entered the North West Vintage Speedsters 200 Mile Endurance event. It is a "Time-Speed-Distance" type run that drug us all over the Portland area, through the Columbia Gorge and...

Re: "I was told once that..." stories...

A story describing the origin of "Dead Man's Hill" in Portland.

On June 6, 1917, The Oregonian carried a story about the deadly car crash. At the time, Stuart was a two-way street. Jacobs and...

Re: 3-D printed hard-to-find parts

If an aluminum one works, then the steel one will for sure. The surface has a bit of the "wood grain" look from the layering, so the final polish and plate will be quite a job.

Re: 3-D printed hard-to-find parts

I've machined a bit on stainless parts made by Shapeways. They are quite hard. I haven't broken one, so I can't speak to strength. It would be easy to print a tensile test specimen.

This...

Re: Junk or fixable?

Yes, the crack does continue into the combustion chamber. I think I got my answer. I won't throw it away, but keep it for future repair, use or trading material. Thanks.

Re: Cracked Block Options

Devcon makes epoxies that are high quality, industrial stuff. You can't usually find them in a store, have to order it. I seem to remember Devcon "F" being hot stuff, but I was usually working on...

Junk or fixable?

S this B head has a crack through one of the "steam holes" is this fixable? I don't need it right now. I just need to know if I should toss it or save it for some future project or swap meet.

Re: Psychological pressure from this forum to "upgrade". Fake news?

I think you're getting a false sense from the thread counts. People tend to post questions about modifications, because they can't find the info in the Ford manuals. You don't post asking about...

Re: Death wobble?

I got rid of my death wobble by replacing worn components and a slightly bent tie rod.
I've pulled leaves out of my springs, but I have a speedster, so the softer spring matches the lighter body,...

Re: 1929 tire questions

WhenI got my new tires, I wanted to try Blockleys. They didn't make a 4.50-21, but said the 5.25 would shoehorn on and work well. I'd have to say they were right. The tires look like they fit,...

Re: steering "Click"

It sounds like a combination of something loose (like sector teeth backlash) and something else binding and releasing like a spring. Someone mentioned a bent column for the spring. I'd look at the...

Re: Leak that healed itself...

There are lots of threads about Model A's being sensitive to oil fill level with regards to leaks. There are lots of threads about different length dipsticks. Yours sounds OK based on the 5qt in an...

Re: Child Safety

There are a lot of stories in the Model A world of a minor rear-ender popping a door open. The driver or passenger falls out and gets run over by their own car. I don't think you'll ever get a...

Re: Lost Neutral

I'd just like to clarify that my post, #21, isn't really a comprehension problem, even though I mention being in 2 gears at once.
The idea is that the normal tranny is in a gear, then moves to a...

Re: Lost Neutral

I know some here have had a bent shift fork that allowed the trans to be in 2 gears at once, thus locking solid. If the fork was just a bit bent, it could "close the gap" between 2 gears, leaving so...

Re: NOS parts I will never use but keep .

A lot of times, when I fix something, I'll keep the old parts around until the new fix has proven itself. Too many times the new parts aren't quite right. I don't usually go back to the old parts,...
