I have seen 3/4in and 7/8in as recommended measurements. not every clutch disc,pressure plate, fly wheel, throw out bearing is going to be the same thickness. And I think the gap shrinks with clutch...

Its not that the bulb is hot enough to melt it. Its that the connection contact point is too small causing resistance and heat, Dielectric grease may help.

you could try leds they draw less.
