Check that the pump top cover gasket hasn't dried out causing top cap to sit on fuel line casting boss , bolt feels tight but it is sucking air.

Hope please make sure your master cylinder pushrod is adjusted correctly & that the piston is returning all the way to rest position.

Droptop that is what I did on my avatar 36. Works fine for me & as David said hose sticks through firewall and just drains down firewall.

My avatar 36 has original rod brakes with floaters installed & can lock up all 4 wheels at any speed. Flathead Teds floaters are very nice.
