Re: Your biggest Model-A mistake of the year?

Not really. The nice thing about the Knipex plier/wrench is that the jaws stay parallel regardless of which slot the handle is in or what the position of the handles is. Conventional channellocks...

Re: Distributor Lower shaft

I had to replace my distributor due to a cracked casting around the upper bushing. That distributor had a one-piece shaft. The replacement distributor had a drilled shaft, so I had to fit a new lower...

Re: Exhaust manifold glands

Thanks. New gaskets, and I ran the four nuts up about a quarter turn at a time. I also figured that while tightening the two manifolds might want to move independently of each other so I left those...

Re: Exhaust manifold glands

Follow up report - the new exhaust manifold finally arrived (five days late, thank you FedEx), I dry fitted it with the old intake manifold and the assembly was straight and consistent within about...

Re: Your biggest Model-A mistake of the year?

I agree. OTOH, standard engineer credo is "if it ain't broke, fix it until it is." And I'm an engineer...

This one was more complex than simply dinking around. The engine had locked up, and I...

Just noticed this is a thread from 2016 that got resurrected.

Re: Your biggest Model-A mistake of the year?

I made that mistake this year (and mine was only on the ground for a couple of minutes, but managed to get run over and looks very similar to yours). But my biggest mistake was, I believe, removing...

Ditto the above, socket and persuasion work fine.

Re: Flywheel Removal

Many years ago I made this gizmo out of a piece of scrap angle steel. The long axis bolts through the flywheel housing, and the edges of the short axis are ground to a bevel to fit between the teeth...

Re: oil pan gasket sealer?

I also use Hylomar Blue on cork and paper gaskets (e.g., gooseneck, water pump, lower water inlet fitting). Apply a very thin layer to both sides of the gasket, not to the metal. I have found over...

Re: Wood graining

Great discussion, folks. I am working towards re-graining the moldings on my Town Sedan using the Grain-it system and feel better about biting off learning a new skill.

For you folks who have used...

Re: Exhaust manifold glands

Thanks, Jim. Indeed, after looking at the manifold after I got it off (old, pitted, crusty, the muffler sealing surface was way pitted), I decided to bite the bullet and get a new one. (Intake...

Re: Engine green

The Judging Standards state "...The color of Ford engine green was neither bright nor dark. It did, however, vary in shade from engine to engine. All parts painted Ford engine green should match..." ...

Re: Exhaust manifold glands

Folks, this has been a great discussion, thanks a million for all your input.

Exhaust manifold glands

All, good day.

On the Model A engine, there are metal glands that insert into the exhaust manifold and also into the exhaust ports on the engine block. When installed these glands keep the...

Re: go buy a new/rebuilt one

I agree wholeheartedly with all the above. You shouldn't tinker with 90-year old machinery and not expect to work on it yourself. However, what hasn't really entered into the discussion is the aspect...

Re: newly rebuilt and a knock

True - I had to turn mine down on a lathe just a couple of thou to get it to mate well with the distributor.

Re: assist seat rope 4dr

Derek - the (I'm pretty sure) original robe cord on my '30 Town Sedan looks a bit different than Y-B's but the purpose is the same. Be careful using the term "assist", the straps that hang down on...

Re: Gas mileage question

I'll add a data point - competely stock survivor 1930 Town Sedan, just filled the tank an hour ago (going for a drive tomorrow). Last filled several weeks ago. 132 miles, 8.2 gallons = 16.1 mpg....
