Re: Timing and hand throttle levers

Re: Dumbest Reproduction Parts

Had to bring this thread back because I'm watching Hagerty's new YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ua4RyfsFes), in which a guy is doing some basic repairs on his dad's '30 coupe, and...

Re: Which Car-Like Vehicles Can Tow a Model A?

Is there any risk in using a tow dolly due to the A rear end being engaged for the entire trip? Wear on the differential or anything?

Re: Which modern valve kit and valve guides?

Somebody on here a couple months ago was recommending the Snyder's-type guides with the shoulders, because I think he was saying if you don't use the shoulder type then the spring is a different...

Re: OT: "An Alternator is a Battery Maintainer, -NOT a Battery Charger."

This is the correct take. The quote at the top is best understood in the context of charging a completely dead battery. This is a not-uncommon situation in modern cars: battery is dead, somebody...

Re: First Compression Test

I had very similar results on my compression test. I ended up also doing a vacuum test and a leak-down test, both of which also indicated valve problems. Here's my thread for the leak-down test if...

Re: painting a license plate questions

One thing I also did that helped, I can't remember where I saw it, was to take a wax pencil and shade the sloping edges of the characters. It really helps to outline the edge when the whole plate is...

Re: painting a license plate questions

If the goal is to be indistinguishable from the original at a car show where people can examine it up close, I agree that a pro is the only option. However, I had a lot of fun doing mine. My wife...

YouTube is the best teacher here. I did mine using this video and a sequel:

Re: 600w leaking out of steering box

Follow-up: 24 hours later, the TS 00 grease holds its shape, but you can see that some part of it is separating and wicking out across the metal surface. I think whatever this is would still leak out...

Re: Anyone know this instrument panel

Interesting that no one knows what make this is from, because it's such a distinctive typeface and each brand tended to arrange these gauge clusters differently. I know REO arranged their gauges the...

Re: Model A ammeter

Ammeters in later cars (before 1940) read up to 30 or 40, maybe it's designed for one of those, or for another marque.

Re: Model A ammeter

My understanding is that the generators, as originally set up, should not put out more than 20 amps – if you were getting more than 20 amps you were doing it wrong. So 20 amps was the original...

Re: 600w leaking out of steering box

Some of the (good!) reviews on TSC's website for the 00 spindle grease explicitly refer to using it in vintage auto steering boxes. I'm game, I'll go pick some up and see how it does. I've been...
