I'm using the Drake welting kits on my '40. Comes with pre punched holes which help keep it in place. You do need to finish the ends, but easy to install and good quality welting.

If you are using the new winged gauges I suspect you do not have an amp meter. You probably have a volt meter. The face of the gauge will tell you what you have.

Oil filled shocks are pretty much a thing of the past. The EPA played a part due to the disposal of old oil shocks into the landfills. Actually nothing wrong with the gas filled.

Remove the cover and clean the inside with electrical contact spray cleaner. Sometimes it's just a matter of dirty contacts.
